Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost...

My blog's name was extracted from the second line of a famous J.R.R. Tolkien poem (see below). The poem appears twice in his Lord of the Ring Trilogy--once at the Inn of the Prancing Pony in a letter from Gandalf to the hobbits, and the second time at Rivendell, when Bilbo ferociously recites the poem in defence of Aragorn. It turns out Bilbo wrote the poem in honor of Aragorn, reflecting his heritage as undercover royalty and a widely traveling Ranger.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king

I'm curious -- why did you decide to change the name?

And I'm curious--what have you been reading to pick up such a fine collection of archaic words?

Wow Tabitha! You're getting up early at college! Or else just staying up really, really late! Ummm...Nora kept bugging me to change the name. Plus I identify more with the lotr's going on a quest + the hidden significance of the poem more so than the rather militaristic connotations of "The stars threw down their spears." I can all too easily imagine a group of Hollywood celebrities skewing each other...Is there a spell check on this?

David--For my lit. class at our coop I was required to read Dante Rossetti's The House of Life...thusly giving me an astoundingly lengthy vocab list. Quick question--in your photo why are you lurking inside a cloak? :-)

Well, it's actually not me in the cloak. I have no idea who the fellow is, but I just thought the picture was rather cool. :-D

Actually, I have no idea why that says 7am; no way was I up that early (or late). ;)
Nora, were you pressuring your younger sister into changing her blog's name? (I do like the new name better, actually . . .)
